Old – New Rethinking Architecture in Asia

The 8th Silpakorn Symposium on Architectural Discourse

Opposing views, such as old and new, are apparent in architecture in Asia and have raised several questions among architects and societies. Although countries in Asia have been undergoing a process of rather rapid transformation from traditional (old) to modern (new) for over a century, the two have not blended together smoothly.

Keynote Speakers

“Architecture and Cultural Significance”
Professor Rahul Mehrotra, an Indian architect, is known for contemporary architectural design not only in India but also abroad. He has an excellent academic background and practices architecture which engages both the old, in terms of architectural conservation, and the new, in terms of contemporary architectural design.

"Copying the Tradition: Brand New Old Buildings"
Dr. Pierre Pichard, a French architect, is the former director of the Bangkok Centre of the École Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), Bangkok . He has worked for EFEO for over thirty years and has been involved in numerous projects on archaeology, architectural conservation, and the history of architecture in India and Southeast Asia .

“Conservation as a Catalyst in the Development of Historic City”
Professor Dr. Harsha Munasinghe, a Sinhalese architect, specializes in architectural and urban conservation as well as urban design. His current research focuses on heritage and society, development through conservation, ecological sustainability in architecture, and the ergonomics of furniture.

Papers will be presented in Thai and English with Thai translation on broad topics, such as tradition, modernization, Asian identity, internationalization, preservation, development, local wisdom, and modern technology from speakers of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand.
